Social Bookmarking – NMCC

Social Bookmarking sites allow users to store, organize and search for bookmarks  to online resources. Descriptions may be added to these bookmarks in the form of metadata, so users may understand the content of the resource without first needing to download it for themselves. Such descriptions may be free text comments, votes in favour of or against its quality, or tags.

In a social bookmarking system, users save links to web pages that they want to remember and/or share. These bookmarks are usually public, and can be saved privately, shared only with specified people or groups, shared only inside certain networks, or another combination of public and private domains. The allowed people can usually view these bookmarks chronologically, by category or tags, or via a search engine.

Many social bookmarking services provide web feeds for their lists of bookmarks, including lists organized by tags. This allows subscribers to become aware of new bookmarks as they are saved, shared, and tagged by other users.

A great way to share a collection of your favorite or most resourceful sites w/o having to email links

I keep meaning to use this, but I never seem to find the time to transfer my bookmarks/favorites. This is a smart tool especially knowing that our MLTi machines get re-imaged yearly.

Over the years I have used Porta-Portal and Delicious to share bookmarks, but other tools have changed the way I do things. One problem for me is that I had to remember yet another username and password.

I have used Porta Portal in the past, when doing grad work. Now I use Dropbox. It helps me use my information without being tied to my laptop.

I like them and I use them, but then I forget about them for long periods of time. My DropBox is full, I can’t remember what I have on Delicious, and my portalportal is ancient.
