May 31 Webinar – Digital Art Portfolios Using MLTI Tools

Create a Digital Portfolio with MLTI tools.

 

A digital portfolio of student work is not only a record of student achievement but also is a way to share.

We will create digital portfolios with some of the tools available on your MLTI MacBook. A variety of tools will be utilized such as Pages, Keynote and NoteShare.

Bring your MLTI device, along with a few digital files. Roll up your sleeves and join the webinar to create your own digital portfolio.

Specific examples will be demonstrated. Use Photo Booth to record images and video. Use QuickTime Player to record audio, video and even Screen Recording. Use Preview to annotate and resize images.  Then utilize NoteShare to not only manage and collect data but also to critique art works.

Follow Up: March 8 Webinar, Multimedia Art in the MLTI classroom.

The Multimedia Art in the MLTI Classroom webinar was a brief introduction to multimedia creation with the MLTI tools. slideexample

The webinar started with an overview of creativity and the creative process in education and the reflection of creativity in our future workforce.

Communication involves more than just consumption therefore introducing students to authoring is also important. The webinar focused on simple animation. Often it is easy to find ways to talk with students about animation. Most students have watched many cartoons.  Students today are great consumers of multimedia let’s make them authors as well.

This webinar demonstrated how to use Keynote as an electronic flip book.  Images drawn with Acorn were copied and pasted onto Keynote slides. Once the sequence of images was arranged the Keynote was shared by exporting as a QuickTime Movie.

Animations are often a form of digital story telling. There are some great tools on your MLTI device to help create stories. Visit the archived webinar with your MLTI device and start creating.

Leadership and the Arts: The role of Teachers, Administrators and the Greater Community (Feb 1st Arts Assessment Webinar)

We all know that in a culture that values the arts, that it takes a village to ensure that they are given a central role in the lives of its citizens.  It is not enough to simply have “arts classes” in schools; we need a culture that understands, values and supports a solid, quality arts education for our children.  And that requires leadership — not only from the teacher in the classroom, but from administrators in the school and leaders in the community.

In hard economic times, and particularly in times when perceptions about school achievement result in an almost exclusive focus on standardized math and reading test scores, (sound familiar?), support for the arts can decrease. Using arts assessment in the classroom can help teachers show the skills and knowledge their students have gained in the arts, as well as the 21st century skills, such as creativity, innovation, collaboration and communication.  High quality assessment practices in the arts classroom and supportive leadership can give us the evidence to help ensure that our children will continue to be exposed to and benefit from an excellent arts education.

This webinar will examine the various roles of teachers, administrators and community members in keeping the arts alive and well in our schools and communities. Webinar guests include teacher leader, Matt Doiron (Music Educator from Sanford High School), Carol Trimble (Executive Director of Maine Alliance for Arts Education), Argy Nestor (Visual & Performing Arts Specialist at Maine Department of Education). An Elementary Discussion: How in the World Can I Possibly Do This? (Arts Assessment Initiative Webinar)

IT’S ELEMENTARY, MY DEAR!

Join Rob Westerberg and Catherine Ring and Guests on their webinar on Wednesday, January 4 at 3:30 pm.  The topic promises to inspire a lively exchange:  “An Elementary Discussion: How in the World Can I Possibly Do This?
 Addressing the Unique Needs of Elementary Arts Educators”.  This will be the fourth of five webinars on arts assessment, as part of the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative.

The discussion will survey participants about the challenges of doing arts assessments at the elementary level.  After all, how can anyone expect that teachers will be able to teach and assess student work when they see 400 students for 40 minutes per week? Amazingly, arts educators are doing it and finding ways that make a difference for kids. Rob and Catherine will facilitate a discussion with their guests, Alice Sullivan (music educator), Shannon Campbell (visual art educator) and Barb Packales (music educator), on the unique challenges to teaching and assessing student work in elementary school, the advantages of assessing the work, and ways to implement quick, do-able and proven strategies that help improve student learning in the arts.

Argy Nestor, Visual and Performing Arts Specialist at the Maine DOE, will also participate and provide her perspective on arts assessment and how to move forward. Lots of resources will be shared.  There will also be information on graduate level courses (provided by the New England Institute for Teacher Education) where participants can take their knowledge and practice of arts assessment to a new level.

December 7: Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAAI) Webinar

Rob Westerberg and Catherine Ring will be hosting their third webinar in a series of five as part of the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAAI).  The webinar entitled Standards Based Assessment In The Arts will take place on December 7, 2011 from 3:30 – 4:30.  Four primary focuses will be discussed:

  • What IS Standards Based Assessment?
  • Standards Based Assessment specifically in the Arts
  • Arts Assessment in practice
  • Looking to the future

Standards Based Assessment continues to be the path education is going down both as a country and as a state. Many questions and concerns arise when we apply “standards” for assessing the arts. In conversation with leaders in the field, this webinar will serve to address what standards based assessment is and isn’t, identify its exciting applications to the arts, and to ease concerns, answer questions and clarify issues around their formal implementation in the classroom. The webinar will conclude by getting a first hand account of where we stand as a country in the revision of the National Arts Standards.

Building an Online Arts Education Community with You (Arts Assessment Initiative Webinar)

Rob Westerberg and Catherine Ring are excited to be bringing the second webinar (in a series of five) as part of the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAAI).  The webinar will take place on November 2, 2011 from 3:30 – 4:30, and the topic is Building an Online Arts Education Community with You.

The three main points will include:

  • Creating an online network of support for ongoing work
  • Providing tools to use for assessment and integration into teaching
  • Providing resources on arts assessment

In this webinar, they will be discussing various ways of using technology to connect with others.  They’ll also talk about ways teachers can contribute to the wealth of resources that only a collaborative effort such as the MAAI can bring to the field of education. Arts educators know full well how important it is to have strong relationships with each other, as often work is in isolation in schools and communities. Technology now makes it possible to connect, to have rich conversations, to share the best practices in teaching and learning out there, to stay current on education policy and to share the wealth of resources we all have with each other.  Wow.  What a great way to help improve student learning in the arts!

Now that folks have been introduced to SAMR and TPACK, its time to talk about how practitioners can apply what we know. The question might be, “How can I look at my curriculum and put SAMR and TPCK into practice in my classroom?” And, of course, we will ponder how technology can aid in the improvement of teaching and learning by giving a closer look at the tools that MLTI and the web have to offer. Finally, we will check out one more example of “building a ladder” of classroom practice and discuss how it might be applied to revamping lessons or units you already use.

When designing teaching projects using technology, it is important to employ frameworks that enable the best selection, planning, and use of the tools available. The SAMR and TPCK models have proven themselves in use in Maine’s classrooms and around the world. In 2010, over two thirds of Maine teachers familiar with the models found that they played a crucial or important role in their work.

In this webinar we will review the basics of the SAMR and TPCK models, using new examples that reflect evolving priorities and projects in Maine schools. We will also see how to use them in practice, introducing the concept of the “SAMR Ladder” — a concept that we will extend and develop further at our October 27 webinar.

September 7 – Maine Arts Assessment Initiative webinar

The MLTI and Department of Education will be hosting 5 webinars throughout the 2011-2012 school year on the Maine Arts Assessment Initiative and how it impacts teaching and learning in our schools.  Please join Catherine Ring, Rob Westerberg and guests for the first webinar, a conversation around Why Arts Assessment? An Introduction to the Maine Arts Education Assessment Initiative on Wednesday, September 7th, from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Instructions for joining the webinar can be found below.

Subsequent webinars will be held November 2, December 7, January 4, and February 1.  Mark your calendars now!  Each webinar will be recorded and added to the MLTI Archives for future viewing. The Maine Arts Assessment Initiative (MAAI) has been designed to create an environment in Maine where assessment in Arts education is an integral part of the work all arts educators do to deepen student learning in the arts. MAAI includes professional development opportunities, regionally and statewide, to share and expand on arts educators knowledge and skills. Teachers will be invited to contribute tools, resources, and examples of quality assessments and supportive standards based curriculum documents for all to access.
